Earth Energy: A CBD & Yoga Experience

Curious about CBD?  Want to experience it in a safe, supportive environment?  This event is for you!  We'll be bringing CBD, a bioactive compound isolated from the hemp plant, into a full-body, slow-flow yoga practice followed by a meditative healing session with micro-massages.  Spend your Sunday connecting with the earth through the power of this plant and a grounding yoga practice.  

Yogis Rachael and Andrew of Ropana LLC, will be offering CBD infusions for the experience.  Before the practice, you can try the Ropana Nectar CBD Tincture, which brings relaxed mental clarity, and/or one of their CBD salves for muscular relief.  This local company blesses all their CBD medicines with a healing mantra that means calm, collected, and mindful.  (Ropana means "to heal oneself" in Sanskrit.)  Rachael and Andrew will lead the class with a discussion on CBD and answer all your questions about this popular new medicine.  I'll be leading a sweet slow-flow yoga session to stretch all the sore spots, and finish the class by giving short face and head massages.

40 Days of Yoga (In a Row!)

In the Kundalini yoga tradition, we are encouraged to practice the same sequence or meditation for at least 40 consecutive days to change a habit and create space for positive energy to enter our awareness.  After 99 days of doing the same mediation every day (my first round, I got up to 102), I can assure you that it works.  The sequence that I do has become a good friend and consistent ally to me, even - especially - on the days I don't want to do it.  Because I do it anyway.  

What would it be like to practice every day?  How would it change you?  If you have the desire to know more about yourself and what you can do, join me for daily practice starting on January 1 for a totally FREE independent study with support.  

How it works: you'll connect with me by clicking this link, and I'll give you ideas for daily practice.  Some options are only 10 minutes long - totally doable.  Starting on 1/1, all of us yogis will independently practice our sequence or meditation every day for 40 days, finishing on Feb 9.  Throughout, we will support each other through an optional email list.

It's the last Yoga Hike of the season!  As part of Peak to Peak, a hiking event sponsored by the National Park Service, we will be hiking up Mt. Peg, one of the two peaks in Woodstock, Vermont.  This annual event begins at the charming village Green, where we will gather and then walk to the trailhead.  After a yoga warmup, we'll hike up the Summit Trail to the top for yoga along with complementary cider and treats as part of the event.  

Don't be intimidated - at 1080', "Mount" Peg is really more of a hill, though be prepared for an uphill climb as well as beautiful views of the Ottauquechee River Valley at the top.  We'll stop along this 2.5-mile trail for yoga and meditative moments, and end our adventure with a sweet relaxation at the trailhead.  Then you can walk back to the Green for a lunch of wood-fired pizza! 

No need to pre-register for this FREE hike sponsored by the NPS; simply join us on the Woodstock Green at 10 am.  Bring water and a mat or blanket for the final relaxation period. See you there!

Columbus Day on Bald Mountain

It's a holiday - take your practice a little farther afield for an incredible hike at Aitken State Forest in Mendon, VT.  I chose this trail because it's got not one, nor two, but FOUR vistas at rock promontories.  Yes - FOUR vistas!  We'll hike the Bald Mountain Trail, which circles Bald Mountain and offers views of Pico and Killington Mountains to the east, as well as the Green Mountains to the north, the city of Rutland to the west, and the Otter Creek and Cold River valleys.  No matter where you're coming from, it will be worth the drive.

At 3.5 miles, this is the longest Yoga Hike of the season, a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself into the woods.  We'll be doing yoga along the way, of course, and connecting with the best of ourselves.

If I could only do one fall hike, this would be it!  At the end of a dirt road in East Barnard, this little-known trail promises a deep meditative experience.  We will hike up past ponds, a brook, and old stone walls to a plateau with a remarkable 360-view of the surrounding countryside.  Better yet, old horse stanchions at the top serve as yoga walls to help support our poses for the hilltop yoga session as we gape at the view.

Yoga By The Sea

A dream come true: yoga, hiking, Asian food, and the beach!  Join me for this outing by the sea at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, NH, which has sweeping views of the ocean as well as rocky and sandy beaches.  We'll start the day with a two-hour Yoga Hike along an extensive network of trails which explore the park's various landscapes: intertidal rocky shores, maritime cobble beach, high salt marsh, beach-grass grassland, and costal salt-pond marshes.  We'll also hike by defunct bunkers, vestiges from the World War II era.  Yes, we will do yoga on the shore, with a sweet relaxation to finish.   

Afterwards, we’ll picnic with a sumptuous Asian vegetarian lunch provided by Green Elephant in Portsmouth. $45 event fee includes lunch.  Either enjoy the beach during the afternoon, hit the shops in Portsmouth, or area locals can sign up for a Thai Yoga massage. Winter's on its way, so take a day and get to the beach!

Yoga & Yantra 2: Sparking Creativity

We continue our exploration of the chakras through Kundalini yoga and yantra meditation by stimulating the "sacral chakra", your energy center located at the sacral plexus.  This focus will heighten your creativity and self-esteem as well as help you understand your desires and how they play out in your relationships with others.  The class includes a short lecture on the sacral chakra; yogic movement, breath work, and sounds to open this energy center; and a meditation while coloring a sacred shape known as a yantra. 

Meditating on a yantra has a subconscious positive effect on the energy center the shape represents. This will help you deepen your understanding of your energy body, or pranamaya kosha, and how this body affects your relationships with yourself and your environment. You will be given practices to help these energy centers remain balanced so you can fully enjoy your life and face its challenges.

For the first week in this series exploring the chakras through Kundalini yoga and yantra meditation, we will be grounding through the "root chakra," your energy center located at the base of the spine.  This work will help you get more comfortable with your body and your relationship with the earth element, including your relationships with food and money, and help balance your adrenal glands.  The class includes a short lecture on the root chakra; yogic movement, breath work, and sounds to open this energy center; and a meditation while coloring a sacred shape known as a yantra. 

Meditating on a yantra has a subconscious positive effect on the energy center the shape represents. This will help you deepen your understanding of your energy body, or pranamaya kosha, and how this body affects your relationships with yourself and your environment. You will be given practices to help these energy centers remain balanced so you can fully enjoy your life and face its challenges.

Labor Day on Pico Mountain!

Ever want to see what the ski hill looks like off-season?  This is your chance!  For this hike, we will be adventuring up a brand-new trail that I learned about from a local hiker.  Branching off the Long Trail, this shortcut through the woods takes us up to the Pico "A" ski-lift with a gorgeous view of the Green Mountains and a yoga platform.  Best of all, tourists aren't familiar with this trail, so we should have it to ourselves!  

We'll be warming up with yoga at the trailhead, then venturing uphill for about 30 minutes to the lookout point. Be ready for yoga along the way up and down, and a sweet relaxation on the soft grass at the end.

Summer By the Lake

Summer ain't over until we've hiked around Boston Lot Lake!  This wonderful park in West Lebanon, NH, still contains evidence of its former life as a quarry: huge boulders which make great walls for yoga in the woods.  After an uphill hike to the lake, we'll begin our practice with a lakeside yoga warmup, followed by a lively hike through the woods around the water.  We'll take the time to play on the boulders, logs, and trees on this gorgeous, mossy hike; afterward, we'll do a nice long relaxation in the grass.  

Don't forget your swimsuit for a dip after the hike in the very swimmable lake! Preregistration is required; contact me to register and get directions.  $25 event fee payable at the hike.  Hope to see you there!

Yoga on the Appalachian Trail

Last year's hike on the AT was so much fun, we're doing it again!  This two-mile hike passes through red-pine forests, open hillsides, and goes along "Old King's Highway," a historic farm road bordered by stone walls and ancient sugar maples.  The hike peaks at a cairn at 1713 feet with a panoramic view of the Green Mountains.  But the true "peak" is off the trail, when we take a short cut through the forest to use an old stone-wall barn foundation as a woodland yoga studio. 

Sponsored by the NPS, you can enjoy our national lands and participate in this Yoga Hike for FREE.  No yoga experience necessary, but due to the moderate climb, you will want to be at an average fitness level.  (If you're a regular walker, you will do fine!)  No registration required; simply show up at Billings Farm in Woodstock to catch the 10:30 shuttle.  Please contact me with questions or concerns, and I'll see you there!

East Barnard "Elemental Yoga" Walk

Connect with the elements of water, earth, air, and fire through doing yoga poses in a natural setting on a gentle hike in the tranquil village of East Barnard.  The good folks of the East Barnard Church are sponsoring this FREE event, which begins in front of the church at 11:00, when we will walk across the street to the Corbett family land. You are also invited to join me at 9:30 for the ecumenical church service or stop by after the service 10:30 for a cup of coffee before the hike.  

On the stunning Corbett property, we will do a brookside meditation as well as practice yoga in the pine grove, on the shore of the pond, and at the crossroads of two branches of Broad Brook.  This meditative walk on flat terrain is for all levels of physical fitness, and yoga poses are optional.  Rain date is Sunday, August 20.

Vermont Be True Festival Yoga Hike

Come out for this special Vermont yoga hoedown where I'll be teaming up with other yoga teachers from across the state to provide an immersive yoga experience.  This fundraiser for the Milldale Farm Center for Wellness is a celebration of love, wellness, unity, and community.  It will be a full weekend of yoga classes, meditation, music, wellness workshops and services, inspirational speakers, mindfulness hikes and walks, paddle boarding, mountain biking, horseback riding, and tent camping.  In between the Slow Flow yoga at 7 and the African Dancing later in the day, yours truly will be leading a Yoga Hike for the event, where we'll explore the woods outside the festival through meditative attention and yoga asana.  If that's not enough for you, the site is also within biking distance to beautiful, swimmable Lake Fairlee.

Sunday Afternoon at Silver Lake

Barnard, VT: there is nowhere else you need to be on this lazy Sunday afternoon in late July.  If you haven't been to Silver Lake, know that motorized vehicles aren't allowed, and the tranquil waters are perfect for swimming.  But first, we'll work up a sweat on this moderate hike that starts behind the state park, winds through the woods on an uphill climb, and then flattens out as we explore the lakeside trails in the pine woods.  We'll use natural props of tree logs, boulders, and rock walls to help us with our yoga poses.  The hike will finish on a pine midden in the woods, where you'll be guided through a relaxation meditation while lakeside breezes cool your skin.  

Afterwards, the lake is all yours!  Or maybe you prefer to get a maple-walnut ice cream stone at the nearby Barnard General Store, one of the oldest general stores in the country.  Country living at its finest!

Garden Yoga: A Meditative Walk

Annoyed with the government?  Me too!  It's easy to forget that they do good things like maintain our national parks and gardens.  The National Park Service is even sponsoring this FREE Meditative Yoga Walk at Saint-Gaudens NHS in Cornish, New Hampshire, where the gardens are in full bloom! 

Despite everything, we are so lucky to live in a country which preserves its national treasures, including the home and gardens of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of our most revered sculptors.  His work, along with Mount Ascutney, provide a serene background for us as we practice gentle yoga poses, focus on our breath, and amble through the flower gardens and the bowling green. This event will include a quarter-mile hike along the park's Ravine Trail which has a short steep descent down to a quiet brookside path, and an ascent back up to the grounds to view Saint-Gaudens' striking temple.   

This FREE yoga event is geared towards those who want a slower, more meditative experience.   The optional yoga poses will be at a beginner/easy level.  Registration is not required; simply meet us in the park's main parking lot at 10:30 by the kiosk. If you haven't visited this gorgeous site yet, no more excuses!
