Yoga on the Appalachian Trail

If you haven't joined this fascinating hike, don't miss this chance!  This two-mile hike passes through red-pine forests, open hillsides, and goes along the "Old King's Highway," a historic farm road bordered by stone walls and ancient sugar maples.  The hike peaks at a cairn at 1713 feet with a panoramic view of the Green Mountains.  But the true "peak" is off the trail, when we take a short cut through the forest to use an old stone-wall barn foundation as a woodland yoga studio.

Sponsored by the NPS, you can enjoy our national lands and participate in this Yoga Hike for FREE.  No yoga experience necessary, but due to the moderate climb, you will want to be at an average fitness level.  (If you're a regular walker, you will do fine!)  No registration required; simply show up at Billings Farm in Woodstock to catch the 10:30 shuttle.  Please contact me with questions or concerns, and I'll see you there!

Labor Day on Bald Mountain

It's a holiday - take your practice a little farther afield for an incredible hike at Aitken State Forest in Mendon, VT.  I chose this trail because it's got not one, nor two, but FOUR vistas at rock promontories.  Yes - FOUR vistas!  We'll hike the Bald Mountain Trail, which circles Bald Mountain and offers views of Pico and Killington Mountains to the east, as well as the Green Mountains to the north, the city of Rutland to the west, and the Otter Creek and Cold River valleys.  No matter where you're coming from, it will be worth the drive.

At 3.5 miles, this is the longest Yoga Hike of the season, a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself into the woods.  We'll be doing yoga along the way, of course, and connecting with the best of ourselves.

To register, please email me by clicking here.  This longer hike is $30 if you pre-pay by clicking below or $40 at the event.  I hope you can spend your holiday on the mountain with me!

Saturday by the Lake

Life is short - include this Yoga Hike in your Saturday errands in West Lebanon!  Besides all its big-box stores, West Leb has this fantastic park which still contains evidence of its former life as a quarry: huge boulders which make great walls for yoga in the woods.  After an uphill hike to the lake, we'll begin our practice with a lakeside yoga warmup, followed by a lively hike through the woods around the water.  We'll take the time to play on the boulders, logs, and trees on this gorgeous, mossy hike; afterward, we'll do a nice long relaxation in the grass.

Don't forget your swimsuit for a dip after the hike in the very swimmable lake! Pre-registration is required, so please email me to register by clicking here.  A few days before the hike, you'll get the details and the directions to the trailhead.  This event is $25 if you pre-pay or $35 at the event, so save by prepaying and click below.  Hope to see you there!

Hike to the Star!

Get yourself moving on one of my go-to workout trails in the area: the Faulkner Cardio Trail.  Starting from the pleasant Faulkner Park, this trail winds up the south face of Mount Tom in 14 gentle curves that go to the South Peak.  We'll pass beautiful stonework, rock outcroppings, and benches on our way to the plateau with a lovely view of Woodstock Village.  After a rejuvenating yoga stop, we'll head up the last 100 yards of rock outcroppings to victory at South Peak.  You can event touch the Star that is turned on during the holidays!

A bit of history: this trail was built by Marianne Faulkner in the 1930s in memory of her husband.  She wanted to emulate the cardiac rehabilitation trails of the famous German spas where people from all over the world came to take "The Cure."  Cure yourself with this beautiful, mildly-challenging trail and the power of yoga.  To register, please use this link.  $25 event fee payable at the hike.  Hope to see you there!

He-Art Opening Yoga Hike

To kickoff the 2017 Yoga Hike season, we're doing a special event which includes a Yoga Hike and private art tour at the Hall Art Foundation in Reading, VT.  Yes, you read right: yoga, the great outdoors, and art!!!!!!

Many things are paired with yoga these days, but art as well as poetry and music have a special resonance with the practice of yoga.  The fine arts, like many yoga practices, open the Anahata Chakra, the energy center at the heart.  We will focus our 75-minute Yoga Hike on Heart-Opening, and then tour this year's brand-new art exhibits at the Hall Art Foundation.  The hike takes place on their tranquil private property that encompasses pasturelands, woodlands, and a gorgeous waterfall on Knapp Brook, a tributary of the Black River.  Be ready to be comforted by the view of Mount Ascutney as we do our heart-opening work, and then soothed by the sound of the waterfall as we open the hips.

Pack a lunch to enjoy after the hike, when we will picnic together on a grassy knoll alongside the waterfall.  (Or inside the the Hall Art Foundation's new reception center, weather depending.)  Afterwards, one of the docents will take us on a private tour of their newest exhibitions, displayed in the renovated farmhouse and barns that give the Hall Art Foundation so much charm.  Be prepared for stunning works by contemporary artists including Robert Mapplethorpe and Jeff Koons as part of the "Hope and Hazard: A Comedy of Eros," the "Ready, Fire, Aim," and the David Shrigley exhibits currently on display.

Yoga is $25 and the tour is free.  Preregistration is required to save your space; please email amanda (at) innerliftyoga (dot) com to register.  Directions to the Hall Art Foundation and other pertinent information will be given to registered hikers before the event.  For more information about the Hall Art Foundation and the current exhibits, visit: http://www.hallartfoundation.org/exhibitions/current/vermont

Yogis and patriots alike know that the goal of life is to find and enjoy freedom from tyranny.  Yogis, however, understand that the real tyranny is created in our own minds.  We will explore how to liberate our minds as we move along the tranquil trails behind Silver Lake in Barnard, VT.  This moderate hike has an uphill climb as well as the flatter lakeside trails in the pine woods.  As ever, we will open our bodies using the natural props of tree logs, boulders, and rock walls.

This is the Third Anniversary of this popular event, scheduled to follow the Firemen's Sale at the Barnard Town Hall.  Indulge your material side and support the Barnard Fire Department at this legendary tag sale, and then feed your spiritual and physical sides by joining us for a mindful workout in the woods.

The Inner Mysteries of Barnard: Hike & Potluck

Why come all the way out to this tiny village just to do yoga in the woods?  The quiet of this land invites us to listen in to our deep wisdom while we stretch our muscles and also accomplish a great workout.  For this hike, we will be on private land so we are guaranteed no interruptions, except perhaps for curious moose!

This pleasant uphill hike transports us to a lookout point where we will do yoga under the gaze of Mt. Ascutney.  Afterwards, we will continue through a yoga obstacle course of fallen trees which provide us opportunities to open our hips and shoulders.  I will suggest ideas for upleveling your practice, but yogis at any level--even beginners--will enjoy this course.

In the spirit of small-town life, we'll be hosting an optional pot-luck on the land, beginning right after the Yoga Hike ends at 5.  Bring something to share, and feel free to invite non-hiking friends or partners to join the party.  The Yoga Hike is $20, payable that day.  Please contact Miss Amanda by using this link to save your space.  (Note that the GPS address is Woodstock, but we are really in the charming village of Barnard.)
